Key collection day is finally here! Take the day off work if you can afford to because there is plenty to be done after you’ve collected the keys to your brand new home.

Buy fire insurance

You will need to buy fire insurance if you are taking up an HDB loan. You may purchase fire insurance from HDB’s appointed insurer, FWD Singapore, via their website. Alternatively, you can visit FWD’s office at 6 Temasek Boulevard, #18-01 Suntec Tower Four, Singapore 038986 (Mon – Fri, 9:00am – 6:00pm, excluding public holidays). The total amount you pay depends on your flat type—monthly payments range from $1.50 for a 1-room flat, to $7.50 for a 3Gen flat.

Should a fire occur, the insurance will cover the cost of reinstating damaged internal structures, fixtures, as well as areas built and provided by HDB. To protect your furniture and personal belongings, you can opt for more comprehensive coverage from an insurer of your choice.

Set up your utilities

With your new keys in hand, head on to SP Services at HDB Hub Level 2 to open up an account. You can also choose to do so online. Your first bill will reflect the initial security deposit, so do not be surprised to see the figures.

Check that all the keys work

Now that your work at HDB Hub is done, it is time to head home, and by that we mean your new home! Check that all the keys work, from the grille gate right down to the bedroom doors.

Congratulations, home owners!

Invite your Interior Designer over

After the initial excitement, it is probably a good time to have your first guest over—your interior designer. They will want to take measurements, check out the space, make some markings, and get cracking on the renovations.

Check for defects

Familiarise yourself with what constitutes defects and imperfections. Should you find any defects, do inform the Building Service Centre (BSC) within 7 days of key collection. All newly completed HDB flats are covered by a warranty within the 1-year Defects Liability Period (DLP). You can submit your rectification request online or to the BSC in your development.

Pro tips: Bring along a stool so you will have somewhere to rest. Also, bring along a table or standing fan because it can get hot. You will be glad you activated that SP Services account.

Lastly, do not forget to take plenty of photos. It is a momentous occasion, and definitely one to capture for the ‘gram.
