If you’ve ever been captivated by the timeless charm of Mad Men, you’ll understand why Jenette and Marcus drew inspiration from the iconic show for their home’s design. As avid fans of the show, they envisioned a space with mid-century modern sophistication of Don Draper’s world—blending sleek lines, warm tones, and retro flair.

From Screen to Reality
The couple was particularly drawn to earthy tones and loose furniture (over built-in) that defined the era. Their wooden dining table, bathed in the soft glow of vintage-looking lamps, evokes mid-century modern aesthetics.

Their home reflects their personalities, interests and style.  “Our home is a mix of what we both love,” Marcus explained. They incorporated retro and eclectic elements. Vintage classroom doors leading to their bedrooms and old-school movie posters reflect their love for retro culture. Meanwhile, Peranakan tiles at the foyer add a local twist.

For flexibility, they chose loose furniture over built-in carpentry, ensuring each item resonated with their style. The open-plan layout combines living and dining areas into a larger, flexible space that is functional and inviting. “Our favourite spot? Definitely the plush cream sofa,” the couple quipped. After a long day, it’s perfect for unwinding.

Proximity and Peace: Finding the Perfect Home
For Jenette and Marcus, practicality played a major role in choosing this 4-room Model A resale flat. The couple prioritised living close to family. Marcus’s parents live just a short bus ride away, which was a significant factor. “Apart from the familiarity of the area, being near our parents was a huge plus, it made visiting them convenient,” Marcus shared.

After several viewings, they finally found a unit that felt perfect—quiet, peaceful, and ready for them to move in. The couple was also eligible for the Proximity Housing Grant, which provided additional support in purchasing their resale flat.

Lessons from the Journey: Patience and Persistence
Looking back on their journey, Jenette and Marcus offer advice for fellow first-time homeowners. “Never compromise on the essentials, or skip thorough research,” they advised. “This is where you’ll spend most of your time, so the last thing you want is to regret what might have been.”

Now, with a space that reflects their personalities, they’ve turned their flat into a home.
