Stepping into this cosy 4-room HDB flat in Punggol feels like entering a quiet world built on the owners’ instinct and love for texture – a space where materials are chosen not for trends, but for the understated confidence they bring to daily life.
The unexpected harmony between raw steel and warm wood creates an inviting atmosphere that defies conventional design. This unique space was crafted by Darryl, 29, and Alicia, 28.

Eager to begin their home ownership journey, Darryl and Alicia secured their flat through the Sale of Balance Flats (SBF) exercise, receiving $60,000 in Enhanced CPF Housing Grant (EHG). This grant provided much support for the young couple who had just started their careers. Within two years, they received the keys to their matrimonial home, armed with a clear vision of how they wanted it to look and feel.

Turning Vision into Reality
Instead of following a specific design trend, their home bursts with a playful spirit – which is immediately apparent to any visitor.
The couple invested about $100,000 on renovations, a transformation that involved hacking walls, changing tiles, customised builder works in carpentry and steel.
Speaking from his own experience with the renovation process, Darryl advised against researching interior design contractors too early in the planning stage. “As your ideas and vision can evolve over time, the concepts you initially had in mind might change significantly. Starting the search too soon could lead to unnecessary confusion or even settling on a contractor whose style no longer aligns with your updated preferences,” Darryl shared.
As a full-time artist, Alicia handcrafted many colourful, personalised pieces around the house. From the cats’ litter bowl to clay cups and plates, each piece reflects her distinctive creative touch. Her artistic sensibility drives the home’s vibrant colour palette and gives each room character!

Paws & Whiskers: Meet Taro and Peanut
Their household also includes two feline companions, Taro and Peanut! The couple chose to adopt both cats (they’re siblings) simultaneously to avoid the challenges of introducing a new cat later and to ensure they could stay together.
Through the Cat Management Framework (CMF), the couple smoothly integrated Taro and Peanut into their home, ensuring harmony, routine, and plenty of playtime. HDB launched this framework in 2024 in collaboration with the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) to allow residents to keep cats as pets, while ensuring responsible ownership, care and integration of cats into homes and communities. The framework ensures that cat ownership is done responsibly, so everyone – both pet owners and their neighbours – can live happily together.

Taro and Peanut create an atmosphere of love and contentment for Alicia and Darryl.
A Home That Speaks for Itself
Beyond the feline companions, which are now part of the household, is a home that authentically reflects its owners. “It’s important to me that when you enter a home, even if the home owners are not there, you can tell what kind of people they are,” the couple shared. Their flat achieves this goal. Every carefully curated corner, warm texture, and thoughtful detail, contributes to an ambiance that speaks volumes, even in silence.
